Chapter News: March 2017
The following are the submissions received for March 2017.

Akron (Gamma-Alpha)
The chapter hosted a President’s Kidnap that collected 4,124 pounds of food for Feeding America. The event was won by the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Alabama – Birmingham (Sigma-Chi)
At the 2017 Greek Awards, the chapter won the philanthropy, scholarship and community awards.
Ball State University (Iota-Alpha)
The photo on the left shows chapter members enjoying spring break and the photo on the right shows attendees at the chapter’s spring formal at Parkview Field.
Bradley (Kappa-Upsilon)
The chapter raised 159 pounds of food for a local food bank in addition to some members volunteering. The chapter won $150 for their philanthropy for the highest Greek attendance at Bradley lacrosse and tennis events. The chapter added four associate members.
Bucknell (Delta)
On March 31, chapter brothers participated Bucknell’s relay for life, raising more than $680 for charity. Chapter members participated in Delta Zeta and Delta Gamma philanthropy events, helping them reach fundraising goals for Starkey Hearing Foundation and Service for Sight respectively.
California – Los Angeles (Epsilon-Sigma )
On Feb. 4, the chapter held their second annual alumni golf tournament at Heroes Gulf Course. Alumni brothers Steve Hauser and Brother Nicholas Yokubaitis were paired together and won the event. They defeated the father/son duo of Walt Edwards and Austin Edwards in a scorecard playoff.
Central Missouri (Lambda-Pi)
The chapter hosted a guest speaker to talk about risk management. On March 2, the chapter held a social with Greek Week partners, Alpha Ph sorority. Chapter members went to Lee’s Summit to go roller skating with a Woodstock theme.
Coastal Carolina (Coastal Carolina Colony)
The colony received their final letter of chartering recommendation from the chapter at the University of South Carolina.
Delaware (Lambda-Beta)
Chapter members participated in UDance, a university-wide dance marathon. UDance raises money for the B+ Foundation, which helps families fund their children’s cancer treatment. The chapter raised more than $43,000, surpassing their original goal of $35,000 and placing second out of all of the fraternities on campus. Each organization that participates receives a “hero,” which is a child who is currently going through treatment or has previously undergone treatment. The chapter’s hero is Hayden, a 13-year-old cancer survivor.
Drexel (Epsilon-Kappa)
Chapter members began a new fundraising effort called Spike and Strike Sundays, to support our annual Spike and Strike Fundraiser. The Spike and Strike event is an annual volleyball tournament that supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.
Embry-Riddle (Sigma-Phi)
During Greek Week, the chapter earned first place in the jousting, corn-hole, chariot and boat race competitions. The chapter earned third place overall.
Embry-Riddle Prescott (Pi-Xi)
The chapter raised $4,650 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers
Evansville (Iota-Mu)
On March 23, alumni brother Bo Gebbie was named Young Business Leader of the Year by the Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity at the University of Evansville. He has been a strong supporter of his chapter and university since graduation in 2003. In January 2017, he left a successful career as vice prescient of sales, server solutions with IBM North America to become vice president of sales and services at Evolving Solutions, a national technology solutions company.
Florida (Epsilon-Mu)
On March 25, 10 dancers and 10 captains participated in the university’s Dance Marathon and raised $28,000 for charity, far past the original goal of $15,000.
Florida Tech (Beta-Nu)

Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa)
The chapter placed second in the university’s St. Baldrick’s charity fundraiser with $14,590 raised. The chapter hosted is inaugural Cookout for a Cause that was co-sponsored with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. The chapter donated all proceeds toward Feeding America.
John Carroll (Pi-Eta)
The chapter partnered with the Labre program at John Carroll University to help feed the homeless population of Cleveland. Labre, which works extensively with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The chapter held an Associate Member Ceremony for the new associate members.
Johnson & Wales Providence Colony (Johnson & Wales Providence Colony)
Chapter members participated in Relay for Life raising awareness towards cancer research
Kent State (Pi-Gamma)
Chapter members volunteered at the Akron’s FoodBank, providing 934 meals to families in the area. We also participated in Sigma Delta Tau’s philanthropy event, FSL Feud, placing second and raising around $20,000 for PCA America. Chapter members participated in a PhiredUp workshop to help recruitment
Marietta (Kappa-Alpha)
Chapter members volunteered at a local dog rescue.
McDaniel College (McDaniel Colony)
The colony held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for the associate members. Colony members participated in volunteer activities for Relay for Life and Cutest Baby contest to raise money for Feeding America. The colony is focused on recruitment and meeting the final chartering standards.
Mercer (Zeta-Omega)
Chapter brothers David Wildes and Aaron Scherf received prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Awards. Mercer University had a total of three current students or recent alumni selected to receive prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Awards in a single year. This record-tying number brings Mercer’s overall tally of Fulbrighters to 13 since 2010. Senior Aaron Scherf will perform research in Germany for 10 months during the upcoming academic year alumnus David Wildes will serve as Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETAs) in Spain
Nebraska – Omaha (Iota-Delta)
The chapter held its second annual Crescent Girl Pageant, an event held to honor the amazing sorority women of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and to enhance the relationship of the fraternities and sororities on campus.
New Hampshire (Alpha-Xi)
Chapter member Jake Dawson participated in Vermont Beardies, a fundraiser to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During Spring Break Dawson also met the original most interesting man in the world at the official fundraiser event that was an Arts Riot held in Burlington, Vermont. Chapter members participated in Chi Omega’s Swish for Wishes basketball tournament and made it to the semi-finals.
New Orleans (Lambda-Alpha)
Alumni and undergraduate chapter brothers attended an alumni social during Greek week hosted by the University of New Orleans. During the event, the president of the university announced that the chapter had earned the University of New Orleans’ first President’s Spirit Award.
New York (Theta-Upsilon)
Chapter members participated in an Easter Egg Hunt run by New York Dance Marathon and the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. As a part of the event, chapter members spent time with a B+ Hero, Edgar, who is a six years old and battling leukemia and benefitting from the foundation.
Northeastern State (Delta-Beta)
Chapter brothers Ryan Christie, Johnathon Ozturk and Jared Ward were named “Northeastern State University Outstanding Seniors”. Chapter members Preston Patrick and Connor Schapp were named Northeastern State University Outstanding Freshmen.
North Carolina – Greensboro (Phi-Theta)
The chapter partnered with Tri-Sigma sorority and raised more than $1,700 for the North Carolina Special Olympics.
Oregon State (Alpha-Lambda)
Chapter members participated in intramurals and earned playoff births in water polo, wiffleball and bowling. The chapter won earned the championship in water polo and wiffleball.
Pennsylvania State (Zeta)
Chapter members participated in THON, raising more than $200,000 for childhood cancer. Chapter members participated in International Volunteer Week, shoveling driveways in the neighborhood.
Pittsburg State (Lambda-Chi)
Zachary Clark and Dallas Hille were selected and inducted into the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society. A number of brothers participated in Pittsburg State’s Gorillathon, a dance marathon benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, where participants raised $11,000. Chapter members participated in a highway trash pick-up as a part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. To attend the annual Founders’ Day banquet, taking place on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg, Kansas, contact chapter advisor Chad Nolan at nolanfarms@yahoo.com. Chapter members visited Gulf Shores, Alabama, for spring break.
Richmond (Alpha-Chi)
Chapter members participated in raising awareness about suicide prevention and raised money for Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond by selling wristbands. Over four days, the chapter raised more than $500.
Simpson (Theta-Lambda)
On March 18, chapter members held a food drives, raising close to $500 and collecting many pounds of food. The chapter held brotherhood events, including ultimate frisbee and attending an Iowa Energy basketball game.
South Carolina (Epsilon-Psi)
Chapter members played kickball with a group of underprivileged children from Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter. Members volunteer regularly with Palmetto Place by either tutoring, making activities or playing games. On St. Patrick’s Day, chapter members volunteered at Transitions, a temporary place to stay to the needy.
South Dakota Mines (Pi-Mu)
On March 22, the chapter held a kickball social event with Alpha Delta Pi sorority. On March 19, the chapter held a phonathon to contact local alumni. The chapter held laser tag recruitment event. With Initiation Week starting toward the end of the month, Brothers and AM’s are excited to grow closer in the upcoming week. Chapter members are volunteering weekly at Feeding South Dakota
Southern Illinois – Carbondale (Delta-Chi Colony)
Chapter President Dennis Ramsook received an award from the American College of Healthcare Executives in recognition of his progress in the area of Healthcare Management. Dennis Ramsook, Cameron Reed, Trevor Murphy, Graham Luker, Avery O’Connor, and Ziggi Tyler made the Dean’s List. Tyler earned a 4.o GPA.
Southern Indiana (Phi-Xi)
On March 21, chapter brothers co-sponsored a Red Cross blood drive with Delta Zeta sorority. Chapter brothers also competed in USI’s Greek Week.
Stetson (Zeta-Tau)
Chapter members volunteered at a local Second Harvest Food Bank during International Volunteer Week. Members prepared food for distribution to small, local food banks across central Florida.
Tarleton State (Phi-Rho)
On March 1, chapter members held a dog show and can food drive, raising more than 515 pounds of food. On March 5, chapter members volunteered by cleaning a local highway.
Texas A&M – Kingsville (Beta-Epsilon)
The chapter held its penny wars event where fraternities and sororities across campus compete to donate each other. The winner receives $100 towards their philanthropy and the chapter donated the rest to the food bank in Corpus Christi, Texas. In addition, chapter members volunteered at the food bank in Corpus Christi.
Texas Christian (Iota-Pi)
On March 25, chapter members volunteered at the Trinity Habitat for Humanity, working on a home for a family who recently moved to the Fort Worth area from Africa.
Texas – El Paso (Zeta-Epsilon)
This month, the Zeta Epsilon chapter teamed up with the university to conduct community service throughout the city. With combined effort from all the brothers, the chapter was able to fully re-paint a house in under a day.
Tulsa (Epsilon-Upsilon)
March has been a great month for our Chapter. Our Epsilons put on a very successful Semi Formal. The High Kappa has done a great job in making FEs interactive for our six AMs. The High Theta and Kappa also combined an FE into a trip to the food bank. Now, the chapter is preparing for our spring philanthropy week, Luau.
Troy (Sigma-Tau)
Over the month of March. We held Watermelon bust for our national philanthropy of Feeding America. The chapter raised roughly $2,400 and collected over 900 cans of food to be donated. This year we also started a new fundraiser for our chapter with the Pantene Hair Donation, our Alpha had contracts printed for anyone on campus to sign, pledging that over the next year they would not cut nor dye their hair to donate next year. watermelon bust 2018 the chapter is hiring local barbers to come and cut the hair of those who choose to donate, those who do not wish to donate hair can choose to donate $8 instead.Brothers of the chapter will drive the hair collected to the donation center themselves. Our Alpha won an award from the university’s Inter-Fraternity Council for outstanding leadership over the past year.
Truman State (Phi-Psi)
Chapter members volunteered at a local food bank and also participated in the Big Event at Truman.
Union (Lambda-Zeta)
We introduced the Charles Reed Service Award to our chapter at our Parent Alumni Banquet on March 11th. This award is given in honor of Brother Charles Reed who passed away from a heart attack on November 18, 2016 at age 40. Charles suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy throughout his life. Charles went through the Associate member process and was initiated as a brother along with his caretaker and father. An exemplary man and a loyal brother of Lambda Chi Alpha at Union, Charles led a life dedicated to living like Christ. He and his wife, Spring started a ministry as a result of their Christ-centered lives. As a chapter that emphasizes Christ as our exemplar, we believed that Charles’ life was something worthy to be honored. The award was given to Dr. and Mrs. Wilson for their outstanding service to the chapter.
Valparaiso (Iota-Sigma)
On March 24, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 11 associate members. On March 26, the chapter brothers participated in Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Kappa Karnival and earned first place for the most engaging carnival booth.
Virginia Commonwealth (Pi-Tau)
The chapter held a Big Brother Ceremony for the associate members. The chapter collected another 354 pounds of food from our Can Around Short Pump event where members dropped off more bags to collect in the neighborhood.
Western (Delta-Eta)
The chapter held and Initiation Ritual Exemplification for six associate members, rising to 477 total initiates.
Western Carolina
The chapter added nine associate members. Chapter members volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding a cabin that was burned in the recent wild fires.
Wichita State University (Pi-Theta)
The chapter hosted an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for the associate members from the Zeta-Iota chapter at Kansas University. The chapter hosted an alumni brother cookout before a recent varsity baseball game.
Wisconsin – Lacrosse (Wisconsin – Lacrosse Colony)
The colony earned second place during Greek Week and first place in Greek Games.
Wittenberg (Nu-Zeta)
The chapter held an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for two associate members: Hai Vo and Jacob Eifert. Chapter members packed three pallets of food, about 500 bags, for local school children. Three members attended a rugby tournament in Nashville: Christian Meyer, Michael Kovack and Jacob Eifert. Several chapter members participated in an event called Empty Bowls that raises money for a local food bank.
Worcester Polytechnic (Pi)
The chapter held an Initiation Ritual for five associate members. The House Corporation is leading new house renovation project. The chapter helped with the colonization of the Johnson and Whales colony.
