Chapter News: October 2016
The following are the submissions received for October 2016.

Angelo State (Beta-Alpha)
On Sept. 24, the chapter held a 50th anniversary celebration on the patio of the Angelo State LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center. The celebration included recognition and remembrance of the members of local Kappa Xi that then became the Beta-Alpha chapter of Lambda Chi in 1970. Brothers who have died were also recognized with a rededication of the Lambda Chi Alpha living legacy area at the alumni center. On Oct. 8, the Beta Alpha Alumni Association held its annual meeting, which included election of new officers, ratification of by-laws, and Alumni Advisory Board discussions.
Arkansas (Gamma-Chi)
On Oct. 6, the chapter hosted a philanthropy event that raised 50,000 pounds of canned food for the LifeSource International food pantry in Fayetteville. Eleven sororities competed in a variety of field game competitions with the chapter members serving as coaches. Alpha Omicron Pi won the event.
Arkansas State (Iota-Theta)
On Oct. 1, the chapter held its second annual Color Run for the Kids in partnership with the women of Alpha Omicron Pi. The event raised $14,000 for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The chapter held its annual Greek Goddess Pageant and Cream of the Crop competition with the National Panhellenic Conference, including Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Through their generous donations, the event raised more than 30,000 pounds for the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, which is the Feeding America headquarters for Northeast Arkansas.
Cal State-Fullerton (Phi-Epsilon)
On Oct. 15, more than 70 alumni members gathered to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the chapter’s colonization. Many of the original 30 founding fathers and crescent auxiliary members were in attendance. While the chapter has been dormant for nearly 10 years, the alumni hope the chapter will be recolonized in the near future.
California State – Northridge (Beta-Rho)
On Oct. 20, 2016, chapter Vice President Wes Cole was inducted into the Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Society. He has received this honor for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the Spring 2016 Semester. Chapter Prsident Jeffrey Perez De Leon is the only other current undergraduate who has also achieved this honor.
Cornell (Omicron)
Led by the leadership of recruitment chairman Nikita Dubnov (2017), the chapter added six associate members: (l-r) Khalfani Louis, Adam Macioszek, Dhruv Kumar, Jeremy Harper, Noah Goodman, and Jake Friedenberg. The six additions raises total undergradaute membership to 66 with 40 members currently living in the chapter house.
Delaware (Lambda-Beta)
In October, the chapter members organized their annual Watermelon Bash, which was co-sponsored with the women of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. The event raised several thousand dollars to support both Feeding America and Girls on the Run.”
Denison (Gamma-Iota)
The chapter added three associate members. The chapter hosted alumni weekend that included a cookout on Friday night, golf on Saturday and a dinner on Saturday night.
Florida (Epsilon-Mu)
Several chapter members have accepted internships: Herman Castro, Purvis Gray & Co.; Arie Hariton, Wells Fargo Securities; Mark Elliott, Suntrust Robinson Humphrey; Victor Dros, Charles Schwab Corp.
Florida Atlantic (Beta-Phi)
The Presidents Club of Dayton named Board of Councilor Phil Parker as the 66th recipient of the 2016 Citizen Legion of Honor Award. The award recognizes volunteer service and Parker has been an active volunteer in the region for 42 years averaging 500-600 hours annually in service to the community. He currently serves as the president and CEO of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.
George Washington (Delta-Xi)
Chapter members participated in a collaborative service event alongside the women of Sigma Delta Tau sorority. . The group volunteered at the local Feeding America branch, The Capital Area Food Bank. The group helped sort donations and organize the facility. The chapter hosted parent’s weekend in their new university townhouse.
Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa)
Fifth year brother Matt Shriver is a top-10 finalist for the Mr. Georgia Tech contest. He has served as his chapter’s ritualist and alumni development chair. Across campus, he has been an orientation leader for the last three years and is the president of the Georgia Tech Student Ambassadors.
Incarnate Word (Pi-Epsilon)
The chapter partnered with Kay Jewelers for St. Jude and put together a Teddy Bear Drive. The event raised $2,300 with proceeds donated to St. Jude.
Johnson & Wales – Charlotte (Pi-Upsilon)
The chapter added eight associate members with a combined 3.86 GPA.
Kent State (Pi-Gamma)
The chapter hosted Pumpkin Bash and surpassed their goal of 70,000 pounds of food collected for Feeding America. The chapter would like to thank chapter Vice President Tyler Andrews for orchestrating such a successful event. Stevie Darling, Jessica Lynne, and Alli Petit were named the chapter’s crescent queens. Clayton Schmidt was selected as Sigma Sigma Sigma’s sweetheart and Alex Spaulding was selected as Delta Zetas sweetheart.
Miami (OH) (Zeta-Upsilon)
Chapter members participated in Sigma Phi Epsilon’s suicide prevention walk around campus as well as Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man on Campus contest for breast cancer research. Chapter members visited their adopt a highway section and did some cleaning.
On Oct. 29, the chapter hosted its annual Watermelon Bust with more than 10 ten teams participating. The event raised more than $5,500 for the Oxford Community Choice Pantry. The chapter would like to thank alumni brothers John Bloom, Mike Raymond and the rest of the alumni advisory board for all their help with this event.
Millersville (Delta-Tau)
On Oct. 16, the chapter held its inaugural Pumpkin Bash, raising more than 4,200 pounds of food donations for Feeding America.
Mississippi State (Epsilon-Chi)
The chapter added 34 associate members.
Missouri Science and Technology (Alpha-Delta)
The chapter placed second during the homecoming competition. The chapter’s homecoming queen also placed second runner-up. The chapter held its second House Corporation meeting to discuss all of the chapter’s accomplishments with the alumni as well as plans going forward with the new house. As a fraternity education session, chapter members participated in a team building and leadership ropes course. On Nov. 6, the chapter held its 56th annual chicken benefit dinner at a local church.
North Carolina-Greensboro
Board Member David Huffine was named a 2016 recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The award is given to alumni who have made significant contributions to exemplify the university’s longstanding tradition of service. Recipients must exemplify creative and continuous personal growth and a willingness to embrace our changing world. Huffine currently services as vice president for advancement at St. Joseph’s Villa, an organization that helps children facing developmental disabilities, mental health issues, homelessness, and other challenges.
North Dakota (Epsilon-Zeta)
The chapter hosted an alumni homecoming event that included watching the Big Brother Ceremony for the 20 associate members.
Ohio State (Gamma-Tau)
On Oct. 9. the chapter hosted a bubble soccer philanthropy event that raised more than $200 for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
Oklahoma State (Alpha-Eta)
Chapter members helped build a homecoming deck for our annual homecoming game. Chapter members hosted a Watermelon Bust and, paired with Gamma Phi Beta, participated in Into The Streets, a Greek-wide day of community service.
Oregon State (Alpha-Lambda)
The chapter held its annual fall philanthropy, Watermelon Bash, a three-day long series of events including a field day, pageant, and watermelon eating contest. The event raised more than 2,200 cans of food and $7,000 in donations for Feeding America and Community Outreach. In addition, chapter members helped Community Outreach with remodeling of their offices and cleaning the main shelter.
Pittsburg State (Lambda-Chi)
On Oct. 6, Christian Tavernaro, nominated by Sigma Sigma Sigma, won the 2016 homecoming king. He is pictured with homecoming queen and fellow Sigma Sigma Sigma nominee Shelby Bicknell. Dallas Hille (2019) and Cole Hurley (2019) were accepted into the Order of Omega honor society. On Oct. 22, more than 30 chapter members participated in an annual highway trash clean-up service project. Founding alumni member Tom Earp has donated a life insurance policy to the university’s Alumni Scholarship Fund to be used exclusively for future chapter members.
Rose-Hulman (Theta-Kappa)
Alumni brother Jim Umpleby was elected the new CEO of Caterpillar Inc. by the Board of Directors. Umplebly previously served as a Caterpillar Group President with responsibility for Energy & Transportation. He is a 35-year veteran of the company and will begin his term as CEO on March 31, 2017. He is the second Lambda Chi to be CEO of Caterpillar as James Owens (North Carolina State 1973) served in that position until his retirement in 2009.
South Dakota School of Mines (Pi-Mu)
The chapter conducted a Big Brother Ceremony. Alumni brother Jin Kim was invited to present an educational session to the chapter members about public speaking. On Oct. 22, the chapter partnered with Mines Buddies to volunteer to take special needs individuals to Reptile Gardens. The chapter raised more than 1,300 pounds of food and $35 for Feeding South Dakota in the Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods philanthropy event.
St. Joseph’s (Phi-Lambda)
Chapter members enjoyed attending a recent event hosted by The Joseph’s Fund, an organization that aims to aid, assist, and transform the lives of many in the Camden, New Jersey area.
St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Pi-Lambda)
On Nov. 18, the chapter will conduct an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for 18 associate members. The associate members won the school’s variety show competition. Chapter members participated in Light the Night, a a fundraising campaign benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. On Nov. 3, the chapter held its annual Pumpkin Smash.
Syracuse (Alpha-Upsilon)
On Oct. 15, the chapter held its chartering banquet. Board Chairman Fletcher McElreath and Associate Director of Chapter Serivces nt Joshua Womack were both in attendance at the event held in the Schine Student Center at Syracuse University. The chapter also held their second annual Pumpkin Smash philanthropy event benefiting Feeding America. Multiple student organizations on campus participated in a day of pumpkin-themed activities that raised money and food for the Food Bank of Central New York.
Tampa (Tampa Colony)
Colony members collected food from the DeSoto Masonic Lodge. Chapter officers Austin Craig, and Armando Mayo then spoke to the group about the Lambda Chi and Feeding America partnership. Pictured in the phoht are Craig, Mayo and chapter advisor Gregory Wynn.
Texas – El Paso (Zeta-Epsilon)
More than 20 chapter members volunteered at the local food bank to support Feeding America. Members separated and packaged food to be delivered to people in need.
Valparaiso (Iota-Sigma)
On Oct. 28, the chapter conducted an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for Shayne Barron. On Oct. 8, the chapter hosted its Pumpkin Palooza philanthropy event. Participants smashed and carved pumpkins and ate pumpkin pie. The event raised enough funds to donate more than 2,500 pounds of food for Feeding America.
Villanova (Beta-Iota)
Last April, alumni brothers Ray Norton, John Constantine, Joe Fitzgerald and Gary Wehren attended the NCAA championship in Houston to watch Villanova become the 2016 champions. The chapter held a philanthropy event, Crossfit for a Cure, that raised more than $5,000.
Wake Forest (Theta-Tau)
On Nov. 4, the chapter conducted an Initiation Ritual Exemplification for their associate members.
West Virginia University (Iota-Lambda Colony)
The colony founders were profiled recently in an article on the Princeton Times’ website about why they chose to join Lambda Chi.
Wisconsin – Whitewater (Lambda-Iota)
The chapter raised more than 840 pounds of food and $200 dollars for Feeding America during the fall semester. During homecoming, the chapter won third place in the march of the parade and third place for best float. They also earned second place tug of war, third place in Warhawk Waddle, third place in bowling, and second place in mystery games. The chapter also hosted teeter-totter philanthropy event that raised an additional $200 dollars.
Wittenberg (Nu-Zeta)
The chapter added two associate members, bringing the total chapter membership to 21 men.
